Adding Spiritual Elements to Meditation Can Improve Effects
Research shows meditation can improve your emotional and physical well-being. And it;s even more powerful when you add something called "the Faith Factor."
"We have this within us and it's a wonderful happenstance if it occurs."
Dr. Herbert Benson is the author of the bestselling book The Relaxation Response.
He says that when meditating, you should add a meaningful chant, or "mantra" that evokes your faith or spirituality.
"It's important to know that each individual should choose for herself or himself an appropriate word, sound, prayer or phrase."
The chant doesn't have to refer to a specific religion. It can represent a personal philosophy or belief system - as long as it evokes a feeling of well-being.
"By opening yourself, by breaking the train of everyday thought, you have the experience of a power, a force, an energy - God if you will, within you. Your interpretation of that depends upon you."
Dr. Benson's studies have shown that a sense of faith - combined with a positive outlook -- result in better outcomes for patients struggling with health issues.
A powerful prescription for optimal health.
