Do Shocking Images Change Hygene Behavior?

We know we're supposed to wash our hands after using the bathroom, but let's be honest—unfortunately not everyone actually does it.

In order to improve student hygiene, one college took matters into its own hands.

At the University of Denver, researchers posted different types of signs in dorm bathrooms around campus.

They knew from past research that signs warning students they'd catch germs or get sick from not washing their hands didn't work.

So in this study, researchers posted signs with a high yuck factor to see if that made a difference.

Signs, with disgusting messages like "Poo on you. Wash your hands." or "You just peed. Wash your hands." did have an effect.

This study suggests that if you want to make sure that people clean up, sometimes you may have to gross them out.
