Doctor Love: Changing Jobs, Changing Relationships
Leaving medicine was hard because I had a girlfriend back when I was a doctor and I had to sit her down and I had to tell her.
"Lisa, I'm quitting medicine to do standup comedy." And she said, "Matt, that is so cool that you're pursuing your dream. Good luck!"
She dumped me and the worst thing was the thing she said sheliked most about me: My sense of humor. Apparently I was a lot funnier when I had a job.
But I learned from that. When I moved out to Hollywood and started meeting girls I didn't tell 'em I was a comedian. I told 'em I was a doctor.
But women in Hollywood are different cuz when I meet girls and they ask what I do for a living I'd say, uh, I'm a doctor. And one girl actually looked me in the eyes and said this:
"Pfff. Well, that's really neat that you're a doctor, but don't get so full of yourself. It's not like you played a doctor on TV."
